Why is Greenlan part of denmark?

So yesterday we were talking about where we live, what country, what planet... when the our youngest pipes up and asks "you know when the land comes to an end and there is a white part that goes up to the sky and it is called greenlan"; which I correct him and say "You mean Greenland", so he says "well yah, you know and so then why does it have to be part of Denmark, did they have a war?", when my oldest adds "war is not good they should have peace cause peace is much better!"... where do these boys come up with this stuff! so very curious am I to know where he found out that Greenland is part of Denmark, so I ask him if he learned it at school and he says no, I read it in my leap pad. So I of course have to google it, as I do not know this for a fact. Well I did find lots of interesting stuff of Greenland, and yes they do follow the Danish governing rules, however it did say they are under house rule.
I love all the educational tools that are available to my kids, however we have come to realize that sometimes new discoveries are made, (yes really) like for instance Saturn now has more moons than it did in 2005 when the book was published! So we read and then we google!!
