what does this picture have to do with a rast hack? ..... well
I have mentioned my rast night stands over the years and although they were purchased as a temporary night stand solution - almost six years later they are still here.
so when thinking what style and direction to go with the re-making of our night stands i just knew i wanted something heavier looking and old looking. Our room tends to lean more to the "sleek" and "updated", so i needed to bring in the old to balance it out.
and this is what happened...
we started with this... our rast night stands that i had stained five years ago with diluted wall paint from our room... i did that hoping they would almost disappear into the wall and not call for attention at all... it worked

(this is an old picture - oh my look at all those pillows - my sweets was not a fan - i agree - back then i had a pillow thang)
closer up and just prior to "construction"...

during....

our rast stands now...

what happened...
it all started when i found G4S 1/2" oak slats at Rona for 97 cents. I bought $20 worth in two different widths and knew that those would be the new fronts of the drawers.
i wanted the three drawers to look like six drawers - so i alternated the different width slats to make it appear that way.
we attached those with carpenters wood glue and made sure to clamp them. we then drilled the holes for the new handles - library pulls that i purchased at Lee.valley for under $3/each... i have always like library pulls - classic
a close up...

for the top and sides of the stands we used reclaimed wood from our annex (hence the picture of our annex above) - so wood = free.
on the sides and top were glued and then air nailed the boards to secure.
i stained the stands with an all in one product (a water based stain and varathane product) in the color "early american" - (third darkest color on the standard color chart for stains) sadly the pictures shows on the orange side - but they do look like a light walnut in person... trust me they look good!

now all i need are some new lamps! these glass lamps were $20 specials years ago at susperstore and although we stil like them - they show everything - i think i hear something white&glass calling my name!
one project down.... only a gazzilion to go! hee hee
